Clifton Suspention Bridge, BristolGreat Pubs and Cool Bars in Bristol.

I know what you’re thinking! A city built on cider - drunk by strange talking, red nosed people wearing smocks (and on occasions late in the evening, in one particular ‘olde worlde’ pub, that might be true - but let’s move on).

A bit of history for you first.

Originally called Brigstowe, way back in Anglo-Saxon times, the original settlement here grew as sea trade developed. Initially very localised between Ireland and South Wales, by the 14th century this had developed into regular trade with Spain and Portugal which started to bring solid wealth to the region. In 1497, John Cabot (arguably one of Bristol’s favourite sons) took his ship, the Matthew, on an incredible voyage of discovery to find a route to Eastern Indonesia.
SS Great Britain, BristolSkip on 300 years or so and Bristol had become England’s second biggest city, with a huge and vibrant port responsible for the import of tobacco, rum, cocoa, sugar cane and more all of which were products of the slave trade.

As the successful merchants wealth grew, so did the city’s, and much is still in evidence today. Profits from normal trading aside, much of Bristols additional “wealth” came from Spanish ships plundered in the Caribbean. Many of the seamen from here became pirates, Bristol most famous being Edward Teach better known perhaps as Blackbeard.
Night Glow at Bristol Balloon FiestaIsambard Kingdom Brunel, a brilliant engineer and chief architect behind the Clifton Suspension Bridge, SS Great Britain (now back and restored),Temple Meads and more, was headquartered here and his designs have had a profound effect on the city, with much of the original architecture still surviving today.

Home now to both the University of Bristol and, since 1992, the University of the West of England (UWE) its population swells during term time.

After a long period of apathy (actually very long) the bar, pub and club operators have now really got their act together and Bristol has some really great venues.

Bristol's Coat Of ArmsDownside: Before you visit and raise a glass of cheer, there are two things which always get to us in Bristol. First (and oh so foremost) the roads. Bristol’s traffic system is appalling - obviously designed by someone who has never driven a car and has a major financial interest in the company that manufactures traffic lights! So, don't expect to get anywhere in a hurry. Second (for you tourists and visitors alike) book a hotel room early. This place has a chronic shortage of hotel rooms.
